Library Membership, Borrowing Facilities and General Rules
Library Membership
Membership of the Library is open to all registered students of the University of Jaffna and all members of the University Staff, irrespective of their grades.
Staff members and undergraduate students are entitled to borrow periodicals for overnight use.
Borrowing Facility
The number of books allowed on loan and the loan period are provided below.

Additional Borrowing Rules
Reference Books: Reference books can be borrowed for overnight use only.
Extension: One extension of 14 days may be requested before the expiration of the original loan period of stack books.
Overdue Book Fines
A fine will be imposed for keeping books after the due date.
Stacks Books
Rs. 5.00per book / working day
Reference Books
Rs. 10.00per book / working day
Lost or Damaged Books
If a borrowed book is lost or damaged, it should be replaced with the same edition or the latest edition of the same book.
If the book cannot be replaced, the replacement cost of the lost or damaged book will be charged.
Cancellation of Membership
On completion of the course of study for students, or termination of work for staff, library membership will automatically lapse.
Students must return all books issued by the Library upon completion of their course or if they discontinue the course for any reason.
Until all library dues have been settled, a Clearance Letter will not be issued. This may delay the issue of the Degree Certificate.
Staff members must settle all library dues upon termination of their services at the University. If this is not done, the cost of unreturned library materials will be recovered from their Provident Fund.
Loss of Library Membership Card
Loss of a library membership card should be reported immediately to the Senior Assistant Librarian / SPRFPVA Library.
A charge of Rs. 100.00 will be made for replacement of the card.
General Rules and Regulations for Library Users
- No items except sheets of paper may be brought into the Library. Books should not be taken from one section to another section.
- Strict silence should be maintained in all parts of the Library. Users must respect other library users.
- Smoking, drinking and consumption of food are not permitted inside the Library.
- Any reader who steals, damages or knowingly removes library materials will be liable to suspension from borrowing. The matter may also be reported to the Vice Chancellor for disciplinary action.
- Books should not be replaced on the shelves by users. They should be left neatly on the table after use.
- Disorderly conduct may result in suspension from the Library.
- Seats cannot be reserved in the Library. Library staff have the right to remove belongings left unattended for an unreasonable length of time.
- Readers must present books, papers and student identity cards for inspection when requested by Library staff.
- Registered users have the right to use the resources available in the Library and may provide their opinions through the suggestion box.
- Users should inform Library staff about the theft or damage of any library materials by any user.
- Users are expected to enter the Library in formal attire.
